Recently I had the amazing opportunity to be featured in a wonderful Hair Show, called Decades of Hollywood, presented by famed San Francisco Based hairstylist , Gina Khan presented for Matrix/Logics Hair DNA at NYC’s Waldorf Astoria

For the very first time, Gina and her wonderful team had decided to go for something different, and utilize dancers instead of models, to help bring to life and evoke the legendary decades and themes of hollywood for style and fashion and  reinforce her philosophy that the past indeed influences the present for style, fashion, and of course HAIR…

Out of a casting call of many, 10 of us were plucked , from various backgrounds of dance, from modern, ballet, theater, street,  to help convey and evoke the images of icons from each decade of Hollywood….and thus we were called in to rehearse with Choreographer , Vernon Scott, who crafted each vignette to show the bridge and connection between classic to  modern age …..through dance…

On the first day of rehearsal, I had NO idea what they had in mind for me , or my segment, and funny enough, Vernon had no idea of how I danced…so i explained that I do various styles of street dance , and freestyled ….

Then he asked….what is Tina Turner to you ……

he couldn’t have asked a better person, since Tina Turner is one of my favorite performers and artists, and of her style is influenced and also within my own style …her power, her raw sensuality, with elegance, grace, and strength…she is the personification of what I aspire to be as an artist in my own right…

later on , I met my partner, Kevin, who is a wonderful dancer who happened to be portraying Prince….who is my number one favorite artist and performer,

Vernon had crafted a darker, edgier, dramatic segment, in which Kevin was Prince to my Tina, in which evoked a stormy relationship, that eventually is resolved…

Kevin had done a beautiful modern dance interpretation of purple rain, while I was asked to freestyle as Tina Turner …..and we came together…….

When Gina and her Team , came to view what was crafted for the show, the level of excitement and imagination fueled the air…our creativity , helped  inspire their creativity…

And thus the magic began, Gina and her team of stylists, make up artists, and hair stylist went straight to work with our transformations, and the result was amazing…all of sudden  the room became filled with celebrities, first you see the frenzy of the 20’s flappers, a la Clara Bow, then there is the elegance of the 40’s with  Rita Hayworth, Lucille Ball, Clark Gable, then the heightened sensuality and materialism of the 50’s with James Dean,  Marilyn Monroe, and Elizabeth Taylor, and the boldness, and edginess of the 80’s with Rock icons Prince and Tina Turner  , closing with the head turning , Lady Gaga, Johnny Depp, and Beyonce/Jlo ….

It was simply magic…..thank you to Gina, and her team of all of the wonderful stylists, makeup artists, and Choreographer Vernon, who was a pleasure to work with ….and to my fellow dancers and artists, it was so great to work with you ………

Until the next time…
