Imagine a World, in which music was merely just sound, random sound…..the emotion of a cello, the cry of a voice, the pulse of the drum

Just a mere sound… that we were not allowed to respond to through dance or express what this music has conjured our imagination to envision and physically manifest……

perhaps the speculation of the dawn of 2012’s suggestion of  a whole new world, different from the world we are in now,  was not exactly what we had in mind….

or maybe we are now left to reassess who we are on  a deeper level, and let it shine…

this month of January , Started with the onset of a Piracy Bill , that was successfully blocked thanks to millions of people who petitioned to maintain our freedom of expression , via internet, which is today’s prominent and quickest way we access information, promtion, exposure all over the globe.

As dancers, if this bill were to go into effect, gone would be the days of posting that battle you did on youtube, or that performance from the 70’s that you happened to post, or that dance class that you choreographed to the brand new song that has just been leaked, and you have to post, Unless you are wiling and able to shelf out millions of dollars in fines, or go to jail

Last Night, Lincoln Center’s Dance on Film Closing , with the informative, CosMuSart Productions Freedom2 Dance, which chronicles the effects of the cabaret law license that substantially shut down the right to dance in the nightclubs all over NYC, that was reinforced in  the 90’s ….and has overshadowed us now, and the message of Sally Sommer’s Check Your Body At the Door, a celebration of freeestyle dance in NYC ‘s underground in the 90’s which provides a glimpse into the underground world of NYC’s dancers, which provides a safe haven , the space, the heartbeat, and the freedom to create and express who or whatever you are ….as they lead their lives in the hustle of NYC……

Then following soon, after,  the news of the death of  Soul Train Creator and Icon, Don Cornelius, who created a platform, to share a glimpse into the expression and the pride of a culture in the backdrop of the civil rights movement, who were fighting for the freedom to express, to dress, to wear their hair, to love who they want to love, to DANCE any way they could, and be proud……and transformed the culture and lives of millions in America and beyond……

It is no coincidence that these events happened in the order it happened, through the threat of government oppression,  the joy and celebration of freedom dancing, or freestyle, and the creativity, or the death of an trailblazer, who brought the country together, no matter where you were„„,at 12pm on saturday afternoon, you were glued to your set, watching the latest dances, Artists, music, express themselves, inspiring and encouraging us to believe in ourselves to do the same…

2012…its calling us to be true to who we are, and to reconnect and embrace fully, who we are, and express it, as this is our right to do so….and in doing so, we can  actively create brilliant works of art, music, dance for the future…..and be the change and the pioneers and the innovators of our future….

The Door Has Been Opened, but we have to fight to continue to keep it open and build more doors  and windows….

Never take Freedom of Expression for granted, it is our life and the one thing that we are the managers of in our life…..

Special Thanks to : Lincoln Center, Dance on Film Festival CosMuSart Productions “Freedom of Dance” , Sally Sommer, “Check Your Body At the Door” , and of course RIP to the one and only Don Cornelius, May God Bless His Soul….
